Good to know: 6 things that make a Santorini trip easier

  1. KTEL buses run from Fira (Oia 20 min, Perissa 30 min, 2 EUR). ATVs and scooters cost 25-40 EUR a day, and taxis are scarce (25-40 EUR). Buses serve the airport and Athinios port.
  2. Summer temperatures are 28-33°C with the meltemi wind (strong in July and August). Oia's 20:30 sunset is very crowded (arrive an hour early). Fira is packed on cruise ship days (leave before 14:00). August is the most expensive month.
  3. Akrotiri 12 EUR, Thera 6, volcano tour 30-50, catamaran 120+, wine tasting 20-30. Caldera restaurants cost 30-50, Perissa 15-20. Round up the bill for a tip.
  4. Fava (yellow split pea purée), tomatokeftedes, chlorotyri cheese, white aubergine, Assyrtiko and Vinsanto. Santorini tomatoes are tiny.
  5. Do the caldera hike at 7-8 in the morning (in summer). Don't ride the donkeys. Luggage can't be carried in Oia (steps), so stay in Fira or Imerovigli.
  6. The hot springs stain swimwear, and Red Beach has a rockfall warning.
