Good to know: 6 things that make a Santorini trip easier

  1. KTEL buses run from Fira (Oia 20 min, Perissa 30 min, 2 EUR). ATV or scooter 25-40 EUR/day. Taxis are scarce (25-40 EUR). Buses serve the airport and Athinios port.
  2. From November to March most hotels and restaurants are closed and it is 12-16°C; the caldera is empty, melancholy and beautiful. April-May and October are ideal (sea 20-23°C, sunset at 19:00).
  3. Akrotiri 12 EUR, Thera 6, volcano tour 30-50, catamaran 120+, wine tasting 20-30. Caldera restaurants 30-50, Perissa 15-20. For tips, round up the bill.
  4. Fava (yellow split pea purée), tomatokeftedes, chlorotyri cheese, white aubergine, Assyrtiko and Vinsanto. Santorini tomatoes are tiny.
  5. Do the caldera hike at 07:00-08:00 (in summer). Donkey rides are available. Luggage can't be wheeled in Oia (steps), so stay in Fira or Imerovigli.
  6. The hot springs stain swimsuits. Red Beach has a rockfall warning.
