Getting around: get a Clipper Card

Works on Muni, cable cars, BART and ferries; load it onto your phone

Good to know: 6 things that make a San Francisco trip easier

  1. With Clipper (on your phone): Muni 2.75, cable car 9, BART SFO 10. The hills are steep; Muni Metro plus buses works well. Uber/Lyft/Waymo (driverless) also run.
  2. SUMMER IS FOGGY: June to August brings morning fog and 15-18°C ('the coldest winter is a San Francisco summer'). Layer up; the bridge clears in the afternoon. September and October are the sunniest.
  3. Book Alcatraz and Muir Woods weeks ahead. The Academy is 45 USD and Alcatraz 45. Tax of 8.6% and a 18-20% tip are not included in prices.
  4. Try sourdough (Tartine, Boudin), Mission burrito, cioppino, dim sum and Ferry Building oysters; for coffee, Blue Bottle or Ritual.
  5. Avoid the Tenderloin (west of Union Square) and SoMa around 6th Street at night. Never leave belongings in a car (window smashing). Homelessness is visible but the danger is low.
  6. Follow Karl the Fog on Instagram; go to Twin Peaks or Battery Spencer at sunset to see the fog roll in.
