Good to know: 6 things that make a Sapanca trip easier

  1. Sapanca is 1.5 hours from Istanbul (by motorway or high-speed train to Arifiye). Get around the lake by car or bike. Maşukiye and Kartepe are 20 minutes away.
  2. The Kartepe ski season runs from December to March; snow tyres are compulsory and the cable car closes in wind.
  3. Trout, spread-style breakfast, ıslama köfte (in Adapazarı) and chestnuts are local specialities.
  4. Bungalow stays are Sapanca's signature; they cost half as much on weekdays.
  5. The Kartepe summit is 10°C cooler in summer, so bring a cardigan.
  6. The lakeside walking path is 5 km long; morning mist makes for great photos.
