Hidden gem: Antalya: Turkish Cooking Class with a Local Host
Almost every couple visiting Antalya tries street food in restaurants, but very few step into a local family's home to see real home cooking. This workshop barely appears in popular Kaleiçi and beach guides; only genuine enthusiasts searching for a cooking class find it.
- How to get in
- Book through GetYourGuide at least 1 day in advance. After your booking is confirmed, the host shares the full address and meeting point by in-app message. It takes place in an apartment in the Muratpaşa district, with a maximum group size of 6.
- Local tip
- Ask about the seasonal main dish in your booking note; in winter it's usually a hearty dish such as güveç (clay-pot stew) or kapama (braised meat). If you're vegetarian, say so in advance and the menu will be adjusted.
- When
- Year-round, on most days of the week in the evening. Being indoors, it isn't affected by weather in the winter months.
- Contact
- GetYourGuide rezervasyon sistemi üzerinden ev sahibiyle uygulama içi mesajlaşma; telefon/WhatsApp bilgisi rezervasyon onayından sonra paylaşılır.
Getting around: get an AntalyaKart
This is the only electronic card valid on all of Antalya's buses and the AntRay tram, covering most of your daily trips between Kaleiçi, Konyaaltı and Lara with a single card and transfer discounts. It's far cheaper than taxis, and it works on airport-linked lines too, which makes it the only sensible choice.
Good to know: 7 things that make an Antalya trip easier
- In January, Antalya is around 12-16°C by day and 8-10°C in the evening. The wind on the coast can be harsh, so dress in layers and bring a windbreaker.
- This is not the season for swimming. The beaches are calm and ideal for photos, but sunbed and cabin services are closed at most of them.
- Cards may not work at tradesmen's restaurants and neighbourhood markets, so carry cash in TRY. At mid-range and upscale restaurants, cards are standard.
- Tipping isn't mandatory, but rounding up the bill at a tradesmen's restaurant and leaving 5-10% at a restaurant is the local custom.
- When entering places of worship such as the Yivli Minaret Mosque, wear clothes that cover your knees and shoulders, and women should bring a headscarf.
- Kaleiçi's narrow stone streets get slippery after rain, so choose comfortable, grippy shoes in winter.
- Museum Pass is valid at sites such as Termessos and Karain; foreign visitors are generally charged entry in euros.
