Getting around: get a MuğlaKart
Cash has not been accepted on dolmuşes and municipal buses in Marmaris since 2020, so MuğlaKart has become essential for getting around town. The card is valid across Muğla (including Bodrum, Fethiye and Datça), so you can use it on day trips to nearby places like Turunç and Içmeler too. Paying by card is noticeably cheaper than a single ticket.
Good to know: 7 things that make a Marmaris trip easier
- In January, sea activities in Marmaris such as boat tours, jeep safaris and diving don't run because it's off-season, so the plan focuses on walks, markets, hammams and village visits.
- Cash has not been accepted on dolmuşes and municipal buses in Marmaris since 2020; without a MuğlaKart you can't board.
- Winter weather is cool and occasionally rainy (10-15°C by day), so a waterproof jacket and non-slip shoes are essential. Many seafront restaurants and bars close in winter, so the plan picks tradesmen's places that stay open.
- Mixed or separate hammam sessions vary from venue to venue. When booking, ask whether couples will be together or separate.
- Leaving a 5-10% tip at restaurants is common. If the bill has no service charge, tip in cash.
- Haggling is normal in local markets, but prices are fixed in tradesmen's restaurants. Ask politely.
- In villages such as Turgut, Selimiye and Söğüt, evening dolmuşes stop early (around 18:00-19:00), so note down a taxi number for the return trip in advance.
