Hidden gem: Elden Ne Gelir Ceramic Workshop

The workshop of ceramicist Sibel Düzel, who has worked alone for 22 years in Pınarbaşı village, right at the foot of ancient Phellos. It is an art pocket completely outside Kaş's 'diving and boat tour' image, and appears in no classic travel guide.

How to get in
About 20 minutes by private car from central Kaş via Çukurbağ village to Pınarbaşı; the last 500 metres are an unsigned forest road. If you turn up without notice, the owner may not be home, and the workshop door is usually closed.
Local tip
Before your visit, say you want to shape a piece with your own hands. Sibel Düzel serves tea in the garden of the house below the workshop and explains the production process; she will fire the piece you choose and ship it to you.
When
April-October (in winter the village road and workshop sometimes close)

Good to know: 7 things that make a Kaş trip easier

  1. In Kaş, cash (TL) is still preferred at tradesmen's restaurants and village markets. Cards sometimes fail in small places, so carry cash.
  2. The main transport within town and between villages is the dolmuş (minibus). Services are infrequent, so plan your evening so you don't miss the last one.
  3. Tipping 5-10% of the bill is common in restaurants but not obligatory. On boat tours, a small extra tip for the captain and crew is expected.
  4. A light shawl covering shoulders and knees is useful at ancient cities and castles. On beaches with stairs such as Kaputaş, non-slip shoes are essential.
  5. In July the midday heat (12:00-16:00) is very high. During these hours, choose shade or the sea, reapply sunscreen often and drink plenty of water.
  6. When negotiating with private boatmen (Blue Cave, Limanağzı), settle the price before boarding and ask whether it is per person or per boat.
  7. In villages such as Üzümlü, Pınarbaşı and Çukurbağ, ask permission before entering locals' gardens or taking photos.
