Hidden gem: Boğazcık Barak Kilim Women's Cooperative

The 400-year-old Barak weaving tradition, brought by families who migrated from Gaziantep 300 years ago, was revived in 2023 with 13 looms in an old village school, supported by Kaş Municipality. It never appears in Kaş's sea-and-cove-focused tourist guides, and shows up only in local news and development project reports.

How to get in
From central Kaş, Boğazcık neighbourhood on the Lycian Way is about 30 minutes by private car or taxi (22 km, around 300 m altitude). The workshop in the old school building is open to visitors during daytime hours on weekdays. You can see the cooperative's women working at their looms and buy kilims directly.
Local tip
Instead of buying a ready-made kilim, you can choose a size and colours and leave an order. They ship it within a few months. Bring cash, as the card reader may not always work.
When
Open year-round. In the winter months (October to May) the women weave more intensively in the workshop, so you are more likely to see them at the looms than in summer.

Good to know: 7 things that make a Kaş trip easier

  1. In Kaş, most small local restaurants and village eateries prefer cash to cards. Carry cash in TL, especially in villages such as Islamlar and Boğazcık.
  2. Getting around town and between Kalkan and Patara is by dolmuş (shared minibus), paid in cash. Kaş has no public transport card system, so you pay the driver directly.
  3. A service charge is generally not added automatically to restaurant bills. Leaving a 5-10% tip is a common habit.
  4. January is low season in Kaş: the sea is not suitable for swimming, and some seaside restaurants and cove businesses may be closed for the winter. Check that places are open before you go.
  5. Kaş is a safe, small and walkable town. Walking alone late at night is generally fine, but watch for vehicle traffic on the narrow stone streets.
  6. If you plan to visit several archaeological sites such as Patara and Xanthos, buying a MüzeKart (2026: 100 TL) may be cheaper than buying individual tickets.
  7. Prices are generally fixed at village markets and women's cooperatives, but polite haggling in small souvenir shops is normal local custom.
