Good to know: 6 things that make a Delhi trip easier

  1. The Delhi Metro is clean, cheap and air-conditioned, with a women's carriage. Uber and Ola are safe; bargain with auto-rickshaw drivers. Take the Gatimaan Express to Agra and the Shatabdi to Jaipur.
  2. From June to September it is 38-45°C with monsoon rain: sightsee from 08:00 to 11:00 and after 16:00, spend midday somewhere air-conditioned, drink 3-4 litres of water a day and see the Taj at sunrise.
  3. Monument entry costs foreign visitors 500-600 INR (35 for Indians); an online ASI ticket skips the queue. The Taj is closed on Fridays and the Red Fort on Mondays.
  4. Choose street food that is freshly cooked and hot, and skip ice and raw salad. Stick to bottled water and bring probiotics against Delhi belly.
  5. Take your shoes off at temples and mosques and cover shoulders and knees. Keep your head covered in Sikh gurdwaras, where food is free.
  6. Tip 10%. Bargaining applies everywhere: start at a third of the first price.
