Good to know: 6 things that make a Mumbai trip easier

  1. Use Uber/Ola (air-conditioned) or black-and-yellow taxis (metered). Suburban trains are packed; the first carriage is for women. Metro Line 3 has linked Colaba, Bandra and the airport since 2025. Allow 45 to 90 minutes to the airport in traffic.
  2. JUNE TO SEPTEMBER MONSOON: hours of downpour daily, flooding, and the Elephanta ferry is sometimes cancelled. Bring an umbrella and sandals. The city is green and cool (28°C), and hotels are cheap.
  3. The e-Visa (30 days) is applied for online. Carry cash in INR (with 500 notes in small change); UPI is limited for foreigners, and cards are accepted at larger places.
  4. Street food: vada pav 20 to 30 INR, pav bhaji 100 INR, bhel puri 60 INR. Irani cafe breakfast 300 INR; restaurants 600 to 1,000 INR. Stick to bottled water and be careful with ice and raw salad.
  5. Elephanta is closed on Mondays and Britannia on Sundays. Visit Haji Ali at low tide. Museums open at 10:15.
  6. Visit Dharavi only with a responsible company (Reality Tours). A Bollywood studio tour (Film City) costs 2,000+ INR.
