Good to know: 6 things that make a Delhi trip easier

  1. The Delhi Metro is clean, cheap and air-conditioned (with a women's carriage). Uber and Ola are safe; bargain with auto-rickshaw drivers. Take the Gatimaan Express to Agra and the Shatabdi to Jaipur.
  2. October to March is the best season (15-25°C). Mornings from November to January bring fog and air pollution. Wear a mask and allow for train delays.
  3. Monument entry costs foreigners 500-600 INR (35 for Indians). An online ASI ticket skips the queue. The Taj is closed on Fridays, the Red Fort on Mondays.
  4. Choose street food that is cooked and hot, and skip ice and raw salads. Drink bottled water. Take probiotics against Delhi belly.
  5. Remove your shoes in temples and mosques, and cover shoulders and knees. Enter Sikh gurdwaras with your head covered; the food is free.
  6. Tip 10%. Bargaining works everywhere: start at a third of the first price.
