Good to know: 6 things that make a Venice trip easier

  1. A single vaporetto ticket costs 9.50 EUR, a 72-hour pass 45 EUR. Venice is best explored on foot (getting lost is normal). From Marco Polo airport, take the Alilaguna boat or the bus.
  2. Day-visitor fee: 5-10 EUR on certain days from April to July (hotel guests are exempt). San Marco and the Doge's Palace require timed online tickets.
  3. Summer brings 30°C heat, humidity and crowds. Visit San Marco at 07:30 and the islands in the afternoon. Mosquitoes in August.
  4. Standing at a bacaro, cicchetti cost 1.5-3 EUR and an ombra 2 EUR. A sit-down meal runs 25-40 EUR, and a café on San Marco 10+ EUR.
  5. Coperto (cover charge) is 3-5 EUR. The official gondola tariff is 90 EUR for 30 minutes and can be shared (up to 6 people).
  6. Watch for pickpockets on bridges and in crowds. Suitcase wheels are a nightmare on cobbles, so pack light.
