Most visitors do not know they can step inside the han and watch a master hammering copper.
- How to get in
- Inside Kemeraltı Bazaar, enter Alacahan Sokak behind Çarşı Mosque. When you pass through the han gate into the courtyard, you will see the copper workshops that are still working. On weekdays the masters are at work from 09:00 to 18:00, and the han is closed on Sundays.
- Local tip
- Ask the master how a copper jug is hammered; often he will put down what he is doing and explain. You can order a small copper cezve (Turkish coffee pot), but delivery may not be the same day.

Getting around: get a Trabzonkart
One card covers all city bus lines run by Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality. It gets you to stops in the plan such as Boztepe, Beşirli, Yomra and Değirmendere. It is cheaper than paying cash and allows transfers. Since Trabzon has no metro or tram, this is the only practical option covering the bus network.
Good to know: 7 things that make a Trabzon trip easier
- Cash makes life easier at tradesmen's restaurants, market stalls and köfte places. Cards are generally accepted, but it is good to carry small change.
- Trabzonkart is required on city buses and cash is not accepted. For trips outside the city centre, such as Uzungöl and Yomra/Araklı, use dolmuş/minibuses; taxis run on the meter.
- Leaving a tip of 5-10% of the bill at restaurants is a common courtesy, but not compulsory.
- When visiting the Hagia Sophia Mosque and Gülbahar Hatun Mosque, women need a headscarf and clothing that covers shoulders and knees. Loan scarves are usually available at the entrance.
- In July the Black Sea climate is prone to sudden downpours, so keep a light raincoat in your bag. The sea is cool, so expect a short dip to cool off rather than a long swim.
- The city is generally safe. In highland and village areas, stick to well-lit main routes rather than walking in the dark at night.
- Chatting with local tradespeople opens doors. Not turning down the tea you are offered and addressing older people respectfully are important points of etiquette on the Black Sea.
