Good to know: 6 things that make a Porto trip easier

  1. Andante 24-hour pass 7 EUR (metro and bus); metro line E to the airport takes 30 minutes. Take CP trains to Douro, Guimarães and Aveiro (book online; right-hand window for the Douro). The hills are steep.
  2. Summer is 25-30°C; São João night falls on 23 June (plastic hammers, fireworks), the Douro vineyards are green, and the Foz beaches are open (Atlantic 18°C).
  3. Francesinha 12-15, pastel 1.30, port tasting 20-25, Lello 10 (counts towards a book), coffee 1; tip by rounding up.
  4. Book Lello online for 09:00; do Clérigos in the morning; the Douro train is full on summer weekends, so book ahead; Bolhão market is closed.
  5. Tripas à moda do Porto (tripe; locals are nicknamed 'tripeiros'), bacalhau, francesinha, vinho verde, tawny and ruby port.
  6. Ribeira is safe at night; Gaia cellars close at 17:00.
