Good to know: 6 things that make a Porto trip easier

  1. The Andante 24-hour pass costs 7 EUR (metro and bus); metro line E reaches the airport in 30 minutes. Book CP trains to the Douro, Guimarães and Aveiro online (sit on the right for the Douro). The hills are steep.
  2. Winters are rainy at 10-15°C (Porto is wet); September to October brings the golden Douro grape harvest, Christmas lights go up on Aliados, and April to May is ideal.
  3. Francesinha 12-15 EUR, pastel 1.30 EUR, port tasting 20-25 EUR, Lello 10 EUR (counts towards a book), coffee 1 EUR; round up the bill as a tip.
  4. Book Lello online for 09:00; visit Clérigos in the morning; the Douro train fills up on summer weekends, so book ahead; Bolhão market is closed.
  5. Tripas à moda do Porto (tripe, hence the city's nickname "tripeiros"), bacalhau, francesinha, vinho verde, tawny and ruby port.
  6. Ribeira is safe at night; the Gaia cellars close at 17:00.
