Getting around: get a Viva Viagem / Navegante

24 hours for 7 EUR on the metro, trams, buses, lifts and the Sintra/Cascais trains

Good to know: 6 things that make a Lisbon trip easier

  1. The Viva Viagem 24-hour pass costs 7 EUR (covers metro, trams and lifts; Sintra/Cascais trains are not included and cost 2.45 separately). The metro goes to the airport. The hills are steep; Bolt is cheap.
  2. Summers are 28-32°C. The Santo António festival is in June (sardines in Alfama), Sintra is misty and cool, and the Cascais beaches are busy; August is crowded.
  3. Pastel de nata 1.40, bica 1, bifana 4, restaurant meals 15-25. Send back the cover charge (bread/olives) if you don't want it. Round up the tip.
  4. A timed ticket for Pena in Sintra is REQUIRED (online, 09:30 in the morning); book Jerónimos online too. Most museums are closed on Mondays.
  5. There are pickpockets on tram 28. At night in Bairro Alto, people offering to sell you drugs are fake; ignore them.
  6. Bacalhau (salt cod) comes in 365 recipes, sardines are in season June-August, and ginjinha (sour cherry liqueur) costs 1.50 EUR at Rossio.
