Getting around: get a Viva Viagem / Navegante

24 hours for 7 EUR on the metro, trams, buses, lifts and the Sintra/Cascais train

Good to know: 6 things that make a Lisbon trip easier

  1. The Viva Viagem 24-hour card costs 7 EUR (covers metro, trams and lifts; the Sintra/Cascais train is not included and costs 2.45 separately). Take the metro to the airport. The hills are steep; Bolt is cheap.
  2. Winter is 10-15°C, rainy but with sunny days too. April-May is ideal; pastéis and fado all year round; Cascais is quiet in winter.
  3. Pastel de nata 1.40, bica 1, bifana 4, restaurant meals 15-25. Send back the cover charge (bread/olives) if you don't want it. Tip by rounding up.
  4. The Pena timed ticket is REQUIRED (online, morning 09:30); book Jerónimos online; most museums are closed on Mondays.
  5. Pickpockets on Tram 28. The 'drug' dealers in Bairro Alto at night are fake, so ignore them.
  6. Bacalhau (salt cod) has 365 recipes; sardines (June-August); ginjinha (sour cherry liqueur) 1.50 EUR at Rossio.
