Good to know: 6 things that make a Lima trip easier

  1. Use Uber or Cabify (safer than street taxis); the Metropolitano bus is fast; Airport Express Lima costs 25 PEN. Stay in Miraflores, Barranco or San Isidro.
  2. June to September brings 'garúa': grey mist, 15-18°C, humidity, no sun but no rain either; dress in layers, Paracas can be sunny.
  3. Ceviche costs 40-70 PEN (lunch only, so it is fresh), menú del día 15, luxury 200+; tip 10%; cards widely accepted, cash at markets. Do not drink tap water.
  4. Larco and San Francisco are visited on tours or guided; the Paracas 05:00 departure makes a long day (the Cruz del Sur bus is comfortable); Huaca Pucllana is guided.
  5. Safety: the centre is empty at night, do not stray beyond Callao Monumental, watch your phone in the street; Miraflores is safe.
  6. Pisco sour, chicha morada (purple corn drink), lomo saltado, ají de gallina (creamy chicken stew), anticuchos, picarones; lucuma ice cream.
