Good to know: 6 things that make a Lima trip easier

  1. Use Uber or Cabify (safer than street taxis); the Metropolitano bus is fast; Airport Express Lima costs 25 PEN. Stay in Miraflores, Barranco or San Isidro.
  2. Summer in Lima runs from December to April: 25-28°C and sunny, with beaches (Punta Hermosa) open. February is the hottest month. May and October are transitional months.
  3. Ceviche costs 40-70 PEN (lunch only, freshest then), menú del día (set lunch) 15, luxury 200+; tip 10%; cards are widely accepted, markets take cash. Don't drink tap water.
  4. Larco and San Francisco are visited on tours or with guides; the Paracas trip leaves at 05:00 and makes a long day (the Cruz del Sur bus is comfortable); Huaca Pucllana is guided.
  5. Safety: the centre is empty at night, don't stray outside Callao Monumental, and watch your phone on the street; Miraflores is safe.
  6. Pisco sour, chicha morada (purple corn drink), lomo saltado, ají de gallina (creamy chicken stew), anticuchos, picarones; lucuma ice cream.
