It is only 10 km from Ürgüp, but the half-cave village of Ayvalı lies completely off the bus-tour routes. No tourist on the Red or Green Tour stops here; only those who book ahead step into a local family's kitchen.

How to get in
Book at least 1 day ahead via GetYourGuide or cappadociahomecooking.com. You reach the village by private car (15 minutes from Ürgüp), and the host family greets you at the door. The class starts with picking vegetables in the garden.
Local tip
If you want to knead the manti or gözleme dough yourself, say so from the start. The host family writes the recipe on paper and gives it to you as a gift.
When
Open year-round. In winter the class is held indoors in the home kitchen, so the weather doesn't affect it.

Good to know: 7 things that make a Cappadocia trip easier

  1. Cash (TRY) is a must in village eateries, markets and small workshops, and many places have no card reader.
  2. Travel between towns is by dolmuş or minibus, but services run less often in winter. For day tours, a private car or transfer is far more practical and saves time.
  3. Service is generally not included in restaurant bills, and leaving a 5-10% tip is local custom.
  4. Underground cities and cave churches are cool and damp, so dress in layers. You may need to stoop in narrow tunnels.
  5. In January, balloon flights are often postponed or cancelled depending on the wind. Leave 1 day of flexibility in your schedule. Snowfall can temporarily close some village roads.
  6. On valley walks (Ihlara, Red Valley, Pancarlık) the winter ground can be muddy or slippery, so waterproof shoes are recommended. Daylight ends around 17:15.
  7. Handmade goods sold by village women (rag dolls, knitwear, jam) are open to bargaining. Ask permission before taking photos, a small but important courtesy.
