Hidden gem: Misi Silk House

Almost every village tour to Bursa stops at Cumalıkızık. Just 6 km away, Misi and the silk weaving house of the women's cooperative that keeps it going carry the same "end of the Silk Road" heritage, but never appear on the radar of tourist buses.

How to get in
It is in the stone streets of Misi Village (Nilüfer), in a small stone building run by the Misi Women's Association. It is open for free entry on weekdays from 09:30 to 17:00 (closed on Mondays). To see a workshop demonstration, just ask at reception.
Local tip
In the small shop at the entrance, silk scarves woven by hand by the women are sold directly by the producers, for almost half the price at Koza Han in the Grand Bazaar. Cards usually don't work, so bring cash.
When
April-October (if you coincide with the silkworm cocoon season in summer, you are more likely to see a live weaving demonstration)

Getting around: get a BursaKart

BursaKart brings almost all public transport in the city onto one card, including the BursaRay metro, the T1/T2 tram lines, city buses and the Uludağ Cable Car. It connects you seamlessly to central stops in your plan such as the Grand Bazaar, Tophane and Muradiye. It is cheaper than single tickets and offers time and fare discounts on transfers. That makes it the most sensible option for a couple spending 5 days in the city.

Good to know: 7 things that make a Bursa trip easier

  1. Most small businesses, such as those in Kayhan Bazaar, the Grand Bazaar and village restaurants, prefer cash. Cards may not work everywhere, so keep some small notes on you.
  2. Use BursaKart in the city. The area around the Grand Bazaar and the Grand Mosque is either closed to vehicles or congested, so walking or taking the tram is faster.
  3. Service is not included in restaurant bills. Leaving 5-10% of the bill is enough and well received.
  4. When visiting places of worship such as the Grand Mosque and the Green Mosque, your knees and shoulders should be covered, and women need a headscarf. A free scarf or cloak is usually available at the entrance.
  5. Bursa is hot and humid in July, so afternoons are set aside for resting at the hotel or for indoor stops (bazaar, museum, hamam). Outdoor stops are placed in the morning and early evening.
  6. On weekends, tours from Istanbul get busy in villages such as Cumalıkızık and Misi. For a quieter trip, it is more enjoyable to go on a weekday.
  7. Arap Şükrü Sokağı is a tavern street where alcohol is served, though meze and meals are also served to those who don't drink. If you feel uncomfortable, walk towards Setbaşı to find a calmer alternative.
