Local tip
Ask about the set menu in advance; on some days the menu includes meat brought from Istanbul. Ask for the sourdough bread with goat cheese. Lunchtime is quieter than the evening.

Good to know: 7 things that make a Bozcaada trip easier

  1. Most restaurants and shops on the island take cards, but carrying cash TL makes things easier at the Wednesday market, at wineries and in small tradesmen's restaurants.
  2. Bozcaada is very small: almost everywhere is a 10-25 minute walk from the centre. Dolmuş (minibus) services are limited, and a bike is the most practical way to get around.
  3. Leaving a tip of around 10% on top of the bill is common in meyhanes and restaurants; if the waiter adds service themselves, don't add it again.
  4. July and August are high season: book boat tours, vineyard tours and meyhane tables at least 2-3 days ahead, or you may not find a place.
  5. The sun is very strong between 12:00 and 16:00; stay on the beach or in the shade at these hours, and sunscreen and a hat are essential.
  6. The island is very safe and night walks are easy, but there are no lifeguards in bays without facilities such as Habbele and Sulubahçe, so swim carefully.
  7. When visiting wineries, don't enter the vines without permission or pick grapes; ask permission before photographing a local's home.
