Good to know: 6 things that make an Amsterdam trip easier

  1. Get around by bike or on foot; the GVB day pass costs 9 EUR, and the train to Schiphol takes 15 minutes. Don't walk in the bike lane (cyclists will ring their bells).
  2. Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House: timed tickets online only; Anne Frank tickets are released 6 weeks ahead on Tuesdays at 10:00.
  3. Winter is 3-7°C with rain: plan around museums and brown cafés, and catch the Amsterdam Light Festival in December. March to May is Keukenhof tulip season.
  4. Eat stroopwafel hot at the market, herring at the stand and bitterballen in a brown café; coffee is 3.5 EUR, beer 5 EUR.
  5. A coffeeshop is not a cafe; photography is banned in the Red Light District. Round up the bill when tipping.
  6. Take the Sprinter train from Centraal to Zaanse Schans (20 minutes); arrive before 10:00.
