Getting around: get a Suica / Welcome Suica

Works on JR, metro, buses and at konbini (convenience stores), and can be added to your phone

Good to know: 6 things that make a Tokyo trip easier

  1. Every train accepts a Suica card, and Google Maps is flawless for train times. A JR Pass is unnecessary within Tokyo; for Nikko, get the Tobu pass.
  2. Summer brings 33°C heat and humidity, plus festivals and fireworks (hanabi) in July and August. Go out early in the morning and choose indoor venues in the afternoon.
  3. Cash still matters, especially at small ramen shops. 7-Eleven ATMs accept foreign cards. There is no tipping.
  4. Be quiet in temples and do not take photos inside. Do not talk on the phone on the metro, and do not eat while walking.
  5. Book Shibuya Sky and teamLab tickets weeks ahead. Visit Tsukiji before 10:00.
  6. Ramen costs 1,000-1,500 JPY, a konbini (convenience store) breakfast 500 JPY, and a sushi counter 3,000+.
