Getting around: get a Suica / Welcome Suica

Works on JR, metro, buses and at konbini; can also be added to your phone

Good to know: 6 things that make a Tokyo trip easier

  1. Use a Suica card on every train; Google Maps is flawless for train times. A JR Pass is unnecessary within Tokyo; get a Tobu pass for Nikko.
  2. November brings momiji, December illuminations and late March sakura. Winter is 5-10°C, dry, with clear Fuji views.
  3. Cash still matters (small ramen shops); 7-Eleven ATMs accept foreign cards. No tipping.
  4. Stay quiet in temples; photography is banned inside. Don't talk on the phone on the metro or eat while walking.
  5. Book Shibuya Sky and teamLab tickets weeks ahead; reach Tsukiji before 10:00.
  6. Ramen costs 1,000-1,500 JPY, a konbini breakfast 500 JPY and a sushi counter 3,000+.
