Good to know: 6 things that make a Stockholm trip easier
- The SL card lasts 72 hours and covers tram 7 to Djurgården and the ferry. Arlanda Express costs 340 SEK (Flygbussarna 130). Cash is not accepted; cards (Swish) are used everywhere.
- Summer temperatures are 20-25°C, with daylight from 04:00 to 22:00. At Midsummer (the 3rd Friday of June) everything closes, though Skansen celebrates. You can swim in the archipelago, and boats run to Drottningholm.
- Meatballs cost 200 SEK, fika 80-110, restaurants 300-500, museums 150-280. For a tip, round up the bill. The city is expensive, so work out whether the Stockholm Pass (Go City) pays off for museums.
- Arrive at Vasa when it opens at 09:00. ABBA tickets are timed and booked online, and the City Hall tour is compulsory. In summer, take the boat to Drottningholm (1 hour); it is a pleasant trip.
- Fika culture: kanelbulle (on 4 October, the Cinnamon Bun Day!), kardemummabulle (cardamom bun), prinsesstårta; smörgåsbord, gravlax, and surströmming (fermented herring, for the brave).
- Systembolaget (the state liquor store) closes at 20:00 and is shut on Sundays. A beer in a bar costs 80 SEK.
