Good to know: 6 things that make a Sharm El Sheikh trip easier

  1. Haggle with taxis (Naama to Old Market 100-150 EGP) or use the hotel shuttle. Uber and Careem are limited. The airport is 15 minutes away. Tours pick you up from the hotel (Ras Mohammed, Tiran, Sinai, safari).
  2. Summer is 38-42°C and dry; the sea is a wonderful 28°C. Stay by the pool or in the shade from 11:00 to 16:00 and snorkel at 7 in the morning. The Sinai night climb is cool.
  3. Sinai visa: a free 15-day "Sinai only" stamp covers Sharm, Dahab and Sinai only; you cannot continue to Cairo. Turkish citizens pay 25 USD for an e-visa or on arrival.
  4. Tour prices in USD: Ras Mohammed 40-60, Tiran 50, Sinai 40, safari 35-60, trial dive 90. Restaurants cost 200-400 EGP; tip (baksheesh) 20-50 EGP everywhere.
  5. Do not step on the coral (you will be fined) and use reef-friendly sunscreen and water shoes. Resorts are relaxed for women, but dress modestly in the Old Market.
  6. Try Sinai calamari, Egyptian breakfast (ful, taameya), koshari and umm ali dessert; alcohol is served in hotels.
