Good to know: 6 things that make a Marrakech trip easier

  1. Petit taxis have meters (insist on using them; 20-30 MAD). The Careem app also works, and the medina is walkable. The airport taxi is a fixed 150 MAD, and bus 19 costs 30 MAD.
  2. SUMMER 38-42°C: sightsee from 8 to 11 in the morning and after 18:00, and spend midday at the riad pool or in a hammam. The Atlas and Essaouira are cooler escapes. Check the dates of Ramadan.
  3. Stay in a riad (a courtyard house) inside the medina; a porter for your luggage costs 20 MAD. Haggling rule: pay a third of the first price. Offers of a 'guide' and the 'this road is closed' line are scams.
  4. Tagine 60-100 MAD, Jemaa stall meal 50, mint tea 15, Majorelle 170 (online), hammam 100-400. Tip 10 MAD.
  5. Women will be more comfortable covering shoulders and knees. Mosque interiors are closed to non-Muslims (see Koutoubia from outside).
  6. Turkish citizens can stay 90 days without a visa. Carry cash in MAD (from ATMs); cards are accepted at riads and restaurants.
