Good to know: 6 things that make a Krakow trip easier
- Tram/bus: a 20-minute ticket is 4 PLN, a day ticket 17 PLN. The Old Town is walkable. The airport train is 17 PLN. For Auschwitz, Wieliczka and Zakopane take a bus or tour (Auschwitz tour 150-200 PLN).
- Summer is 22-28°C. Expect Tatra hikes, Vistula boats, Wianki (June) and the Jewish Culture Festival (June-July). Zakopane gets crowded.
- Pierogi cost 25-35 PLN, zapiekanka 15, obwarzanek 3, a milk bar meal 20, beer 12. Tip 10%. Poland is cheap and cards are accepted everywhere.
- Auschwitz: the online guided tour is 90 PLN and MANDATORY (free entry before 07:30 or in the evening). Not recommended under 14. Book Schindler and Wieliczka online; museums have restricted entry on Mondays.
- Wawel State Rooms are timed. The St Mary's altarpiece opens at 12:00. The hejnał sounds to all four directions every hour.
- Vodka: żubrówka with apple juice (szarlotka). At night in Kazimierz, head to Plac Nowy.
