Good to know: 6 things that make a Hanoi trip easier

  1. Grab (motorbike or car) is cheap; the Old Quarter is walkable, so cross among the motorbikes at a steady pace. For Ha Long and Ninh Binh, a tour (hotel pick-up included) is the most practical.
  2. From May to September it is 33°C, humid and showery; sightsee in the morning and duck into a cafe at midday. Ha Long trips can be cancelled because of storms.
  3. Pho costs 50-70,000 VND, bun cha 70-80,000, egg coffee 35,000, bia hoi 10-15,000; bring cash in small notes.
  4. The mausoleum is closed Monday and Friday, and even when open it is only open in the morning. Cover shoulders and knees in temples, and stay quiet in the mausoleum.
  5. Train Street access varies; cafe owners will tell you the times. Keep away from the track.
  6. Haggle 30-50% in markets; use Grab for taxis, as street taxi meters can be rigged.
