Good to know: 6 things that make a Berlin trip easier
- A BVG day ticket for zones A and B costs about 9 EUR; the Berlin WelcomeCard covers transport plus discounts. The FEX/S9 to BER takes 30-40 minutes. Cycling is ideal in this flat city.
- The Reichstag dome is free, but register online 2-3 weeks ahead. Museum Island uses timed tickets, and entry is free on the first Sunday of the month (Museumssonntag).
- Summer temperatures are 22-28°C and daylight lasts until 21:30. Make the most of parks, the canal, open-air cinemas and Tempelhof; in August you can swim in the lakes (Wannsee).
- Doner costs 6-8 EUR (Mustafa's, Rüyam) and currywurst 4-5 EUR; a restaurant meal is 15-25 EUR. A tip of 5-10% or simply rounding up the bill is enough; cash is still common.
- Shops are closed on Sundays. The Mauerpark flea market is on Sunday, and Markthalle Neun is busiest on Thursday evening.
- Clubs (Berghain) run Friday to Sunday; the door policy is selective, so wear black. Photos are forbidden.
