Good to know: 6 things that make a Rio de Janeiro trip easier

  1. The metro (Zona Sul to Centro) is safe and clean; Uber and 99 are cheap; the Niterói ferry leaves from Praça XV. Galeão takes 45-60 minutes; Santos Dumont is in the city.
  2. December to March is summer: 35-40°C, humid and rainy. Carnival falls in February or March (hotels cost three times as much, with blocos street parties). On New Year's Eve, 2 million people dress in white on Copacabana.
  3. SAFETY: Don't show your phone on the street, don't leave belongings on the beach (swim one at a time), don't walk on the seafront at night, and don't enter a favela without a guide. Zona Sul (Ipanema, Leblon, Copacabana) is comfortable by day.
  4. Corcovado train 100 BRL, Sugarloaf 180, Maracanã 60; por quilo (pay-by-weight) restaurant 40-60, chope 12, caipirinha 20; 10% service charge is added to the bill. Cards are accepted everywhere, and Pix works too.
  5. Christ the Redeemer at 08:00 (cloud rolls in after noon), Sugarloaf at sunset; take the Ilha Grande tour early; Pedra Bonita in the morning.
  6. Feijoada on Saturday, açaí, pão de queijo, moqueca, picanha; Globo biscuits on the beach.
